FOOD PICKER SYSTEM: A robotic picking solution using volumetric machine vision for meat cuts

The cutting process is a demanding, continuous operation running from slaughter to packaging, handling large volumes of product at high speed. Companies must ensure food safety by minimizing product handling to reduce the risk of cross-contamination and microbiological contamination. Energy optimization of production processes is equally critical.
- The aim of this project is to investigate the feasibility of a robotic prototype incorporating a 3D machine vision scanner, which would reduce the time taken to place and position the products in question at the feed-in point of the packaging machine in the pig cutting plant, as well as the workload and physical strain required of the line operator. All this, combined with increased efficiency, through the application of technology and innovation.
- The aim is therefore to automate the picking process, creating a robotic solution for gripping the product and positioning it on the conveyor belt, whilst also analysing the prototype’s safety and energy efficiency. It should be noted that the product will be picked up in a chaotic manner; in other words, the product will enter the line in a disorderly fashion and in a variety of positions, and this is where the project’s greatest challenge lies. There is no similar prototype on the market featuring the technology presented in this project.
